Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
CONGRATULATIONS on making the environmentally sound decision to
recycle in your Multi-Family Community! By recycling, you and your residents
are helping to prolong the life of our landfills. However, recycling is
not the only way to achieve this goal. You can encourage your residents
to use the three R’s - Reduce, Reuse and then Recycle. The less
material in the waste stream, the better.
The following are some tips to assist your residents in using
the three R’s.
REDUCE
By reducing trash disposal you are directly contributing to the preservation
of the environment.
Some more specific ways to reduce trash are such things as:
- Purchasing products with less packaging

- Composting your food waste
- Stop your junk mail delivery by writing to:
Direct Marketing Association
Mail Preference Service
P.O. Box 9008
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008
- Don’t print email, drafts, etc. unless a hard copy is needed
REUSE
By reusing materials you are not only eliminating waste production
but you are saving yourself money in the process. Here are some helpful
hints for reusing products:
- Use canvas bags when grocery shopping
- Use plastic or paper shopping bags as trash liners
- Donate used items to charity or non-profits
- Use both sides of the paper (e.g. take notes, make copies)
- Find other uses for ordinary products
- Organize or participate in a swap meet or yard sale

RECYCLE
As emphasized in this manual, recycling is a great way to conserve the
Earth’s resources. Here is a brief over-view of items to be recycled:
- Mixed paper
- Cardboard
- Tin, aluminum, household metals
- Glass
- Plastics #1-7
- Yard waste
- Give obscure items to companies that can reuse them
