WELCOME TO MULTI-FAMILY
RECYCLING AND WASTE REDUCTION

As a property owner/manager, you understand the importance of receiving the most for your money. Keeping this in mind, it may surprise you that at least 50% of materials the average person disposes of can be recycled. And the more you recycle, the less you pay in trash collection fees. Therefore, BFI Waste Services has created a comprehensive recycling and waste reduction program designed specifically for use in the Multi-Family Community (MFC). When conducted effectively, recycling can be a strong force in cutting costs, establishing stronger relationships with your residents and staff and, most importantly, helping the environment.

As an owner or manager, you are the key to the success of this recycling & waste reduction initiative. It is up to you to create a program that meets the needs of your community. By implementing recycling at your MFC you will assist the City of Salinas in complying with the California Integrated Waste Management Act, Assembly Bill 939 (AB 939). AB 939 requires all California cities and counties to reduce the volume of waste deposited in landfills by 50% by the year 2000 and continue to remain at 50% or higher for each subsequent year.

Since opening its Salinas office in July 2001, BFI has helped raise local diversion rates from 24% to 49%. Most of this is due to its state-of-the-art co-mingled recycling system. MFC programs are another way for BFI to continue to operate and expand our waste diversion programs.

The goal of this guide will help you create a recycling program that will:

  • Significantly reduce your current garbage volume.
  • Ensure community participation through education and communication.
  • Potentially reduce or stabilize your overall waste costs.

This section of the web site provides you with step-by-step instructions to develop and implement an appropriate waste reduction and recycling program for your residents. To make this transition as smooth as possible, BFI is available to answer questions regarding this guide and assist with outreach and education for your residents.
