How Do Basketball Hoops & Mailboxes Affect Trash Collection?
Portable basketball hoops (those not cemented in the ground) placed in driveway entrances, on sidewalks or anywhere close to the street can be damaged by BFI trucks. BFI utilizes automated trucks, which have an "arm" that grabs the trash or recycling cart, lifts it from the ground and tips the contents of the cart into the truck. The "arm" then swings downward placing the cart back at your curbside. If a basketball hoop is anywhere near the collection process it can easily be damaged. So enjoy your game of hoops, just be sure the area surrounding your carts is clear of all obstructions on collection day. While your mailbox is not as mobile as a basketball
hoop might be, it can still be an obstacle to a BFI truck. We ask that
you place your waste carts several feet away from the mailbox, perhaps
on the opposite curb or even in the driveway entrance. This will ensure
that the mailbox won’t be damaged by the truck "arm"
or a cart in mid-collection. Another reason to keep a good distance
between the mailbox and carts is for postal delivery. You may not receive
your mail if waste carts block the box!
