BFI WASTE SERVICES ANNOUNCES 2007 CURBEE RECYCLING AWARD WINNERS
November 12, 2007... BFI Waste Services today announced the winners of its 2007 Curbee Recycling awards. The Curbee Awards recognize outstanding business and community organizations for their innovative waste reduction and environmental protection programs. Each award winner was recognized at the Salinas City Council meeting and presented with a special award for their accomplishments.
The award winners were selected for programs that contribute to the City's efforts to reduce waste from our landfills and conserving natural resources. " It's our job and commitment to see tht Salinas Recycles, and we know we can't do it alone," said Doug Kenyon, general manager for BFI Waste Services. "Companies who take the initiative - such as the local awards winners we announced today - really make a difference in the quality of our City's environment."
AF Evens featuring Northridge Apartments: One of the core values for AF Evens Company is to "Go Green" and by doing so, they have partnered with high quality "green" manufacturers for their apartment complexes nationwide. One such property, Northridge Apartments switched to a recycling program which dropped their trash service to once a week, distributed recycling education materials and recycling bins for each apartment, informed residents about the managers office as a drop off location for universal waste (batteries, florescent light tubes, cell phones), entertained residents one weekend with a "recycling party," and replaced the existing carpet, paint, cleaning supplies, hand towels, etc. with eco-friendly products. They contribute to the stewardship of the environment by aiming high and going green!
The Salinas Californian: The Salinas Californian joined BFI's business recycling program for two reasons. One was to lower their trash bill and the second was to recycle their mixed office waste and newsprint. Over the last year, the Californian has been able to recycle 416 tons of newsprint! The education never stopped as employees received recycle reminders in their check stubs and emails about recycling and the do's and don'ts of recycling posted throughout their building.
Creekbridge Shopping Center: For over three years, this shopping center has been one of the premier leaders in our community by instilling in their business tenants the benefits of recycling. This has been no easy task - adjusting container and enclosure sizes with over 33 stores, coordinating recycling pickups, and educating new businesses to the Center. However, through the persistent, environmentally friendly site manager, Creekbridge has seen a drop in their trash bill and has recycled over 68 tons of mixed materials in the last three years!
We congratulate each of this year's Curbee Award winners," said Cindy Rogers, recycling community affairs manager for BFI. "Annually, business waste accounts for half of the materials potentially headed for the County's landfills. Every winner of the award has done an outstanding job of finding new uses and recycling opportunities for their surplus materials. that kind of dedication translates into savings for both the environment and their bottom line."
