Ever wonder what to do with your used motor oil? How about recycle it?

WHY CURBSIDE OIL & FILTER RECYCLING?

We brought curbside oil and filter recycling to your door to increase convenience. Approximately 50% of oil generated by do-it-yourself oil changers in the City of Salinas is not currently recycled. Even fewer oil filters are recycled. Now recycling is so easy that there is no reason not to recycle oil and filters. All we ask is that you protect the environment when changing your oil. Click here to find out more about recycling in your area.

HERE’S WHAT TO DO!

  1. Simply visit the BFI office at 271 Rianda Street, request your BFI-approved oil jugs (two containers to a customer, please) and use them to collect your used motor oil.

  2. Change your oil. Avoid spills. Immediately clean up spills if they happen.

  3. Carefully transfer oil from oil pan to oil recycling container. Pour slowly to avoid spills. Secure the cap tightly.

  4. Drain oil filter. Filters should drain for several hours.

  5. Place the used oil filter in the filter bag provided and attach it around the container.

  6. Do not place your oil container or filter bag out more than 12 hours before pickup. Oil is a hazard so it is important not to leave it unattended for extended periods of time.

  7. When full, place the containers at the curb by 6:00 a.m., on your waste collection day and your recycle driver will empty and leave them for you to use again!

*Hint: Only use BFI-approved containers (no milk containers) to avoid spillage
